Medicines in Scotland: What’s the right treatment for you?

This factsheet explains how your doctor (or other healthcare professional) decides what is the right treatment for you, whether you need a medicine and, if so, which medicine to prescribe.

Medicines are usually prescribed by a doctor. However, other healthcare professionals can also prescribe medicines (for example some nurses, pharmacists, dentists and physiotherapists). In this factsheet, “healthcare professional” is used to describe the person prescribing the medicine.

NHS Scotland is improving the way it uses information from GP patient records

NHS Scotland is improving the way it uses information from GP patient records. SPIRE is a service that will allow small amounts of information from GP practice records to be used to help doctors’ surgeries, NHS Scotland and the Scottish Government to improve care and plan services, and to help researchers to learn more from patient information held at GP practices.

A new campaign is underway to inform patients across Scotland of the benefits of the service, and the confidential and secure way in which GP patient records will be used to help plan and improve health care services.
You have a choice about your patient record being used in this way. To find out more go to www.spire.scot

Change to Repeat Prescription Collection Time

All repeat prescription requests will now be processed and ready for collection 48hrs after receiving your request (excluding weekends/public holidays).  Please also note that some of the local chemists collect prescriptions from us (please let us know if you wish to use this service).

We would like to encourage patients to order their repeat medication at least 1 week before they require it.  Repeat medication can now be ordered securely online via our Patient Access system (please ask at reception for information on registering for this service).  Alternatively repeat medication can be ordered by completing and handing in/posting your order sheet found on the right hand side of your prescription.  Prescription requests will NOT normally be accepted by telephone as this can lead to mistakes. There are also certain medicines which cannot be prescribed without first seeing the doctor.

Patient Access – Online Appointment Booking & Repeat Prescription Ordering

Our Patient Access system is a convenient way of booking and cancelling routine Doctor appointments online and ordering repeat medications.  If you would like to take advantage of this please collect a registration form from reception and return it with photographic ID.  You will then be issued with a user name and PIN and can then book/cancel your own appointments online as well as order your repeat medication.

Please note that this replaces the email prescription ordering system we previously used and the email facility is no longer available.  For further information please ask at reception.
